List of Indian Armed Forces:  Military forces play a crucial role in securing land and maritime borders, and airspace, along with maintaining peace in a country. The military forces of India are known as the Indian Armed Forces. These are divided into three – the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force. The President of India is the supreme commandant of the Indian Armed Forces while the responsibility of the National Defence in India rests with the Cabinet, discharged through the Ministry of Defence (MOD). Defence chief General Bipin Rawat dies in chopper crash

Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and his wife Madhulika Rawat have been confirmed to be among the 13 people who died in the IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter crash near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu earlier yesterday.  This was confirmed by Indian Air Force in an official tweet. Key Points  Internal Security  The Centre approved the creation of the post of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and the Department of Military Affairs as the fifth department within the Ministry of Defence. General Bipin Rawat will be appointed as the country's first Chief of Defence Staff. The CDS will be a four-star General/Officer who will act as the Principal Military Advisor to the Defence Minister on all tri-services (Army, Navy, and Indian Air Force) matters. Its creation was recommended in 2001 by a Group of Ministers (GoM) that was tasked with studying the Kargil Review Committee (1999) report. Indian Navy Day 2021 It is celebrated every year on December 4 to acknowledge the role and achievements of the Indian Navy. The Indian Navy is a well-balanced three-dimensional troop, competent of operations above, on, and under the surface of the oceans and safeguarding our national interests.  The theme of Navy Day 2020 was "Indian Navy Combat Ready, Credible & Cohesive". Chhatrapati Shivaji Bhosle, the Maratha emperor of the 17th century is regarded as the “Father of the Indian Navy”.  Operation Trident and the Indian Navy It was a counter-attack by Indian Navy on the Karachi harbour during the Indo-Pakistan war in 1971. India used anti-ship missiles for the first time during this operation and destroyed the Pakistani destroyer ship PNS Khaibar. The Indian Navy's three warships - INS Nipat, INS Nirghat and INS Veer - played an important role in the attack.
