Economic Weaker Section and 103rd Constitution Amendment

The Union government has decided to revisit the criteria set out for eligibility for its 10% reservation under the economically weaker sections after the question from the Supreme Court of India

EWS AND RESERVATION SYSTEM

The 103rd Constitution Amendment introduced the 10% reservation for the citizens except those in the classes that already enjoy reservations.

It added clause(6) to Article 16. So it allows reservation in educational institutions both private and public except for minority institutions.

CRITERIA TO IDENTIFY EWS

Those above the annual income limit of 8 Lakhs are excluded ( Income from all the sources such as salary, business, agriculture)

Possession of any of these assets make any person stand outside the EWS pool
( Five or more acres of agricultural land, a residential flat of 1000 sq.ft. and above, a residential plot of 100 square yards and above in notified municipalities, and a residential plot of 200 square yards and above in other areas.

National helpline against atrocities on SCs and STs launched- Read more SC/ST helpline number:  The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment launched a National Helpline against atrocities on December 13, 2021.
